Web Site to close January 26, 2008
It is with deep regret that SBSS will be removing this web site from the internet on Saturday, January 26th. Maria has asked me to make this announcement which is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.
Having known her as I have for almost 10 years, she has been much more than just another client, but also a friend and a close one. As many of you know, Maria has been battling not only severe burns since she was four years old but more recently cancer stepped into the picture. She has been putting up a brave, courageous fight against it. Now that it has spread into her lungs and the doctors can do no more, it looks as if she has but a short time to be with us.
Maria has been a great blessing to many burn survivors through the years and, more recently, to cancer patients who have crossed her path. For that matter, she has been a great blessing to anyone who has crossed her path!
NOTE: The only workable links you may click on are the "Poetry by Maria Tereza Patterson" and "Encouraging Words ..." at the top of the right hand column of this page.

Surviving Burns Support Services, Inc. (SBSS) is a burn survivor support group outreach for mentoring burn survivors of all ages, and their friends and family. |
SBSS is dedicated to mentoring burn survivors, their friends and family via telecommunication and hospital visits to burn survivors. We also refer burn survivors to retreats and camps especially interested in mentoring children and adult survivors.
Our burn support group wants to inform you how to better understand and deal with your burns. We want to help empower you with a graceful, lifelong emotional healing. And, we want to encourage you to never give up. You're not alone! Our burn survivor support group is here to give you that assurance.
Our Burn Treatment page explains what happens when you get burned and afterwards, skin grafts, and the importance of exercise. Our Hug Therapypage goes into detail about the benefits of getting and giving hugs. Our Mentoring burn survivors page explains what a mentor is, why SBSS is qualified to mentor burn survivors, and how we do it. Our Camp for Kids page includes pictures and poetry written by and for child burn survivors. We also have a Message to Parents of Burned Children about acceptance, overcoming anger, grief, and sorrow, dealing with overprotection and nightmares ... and accepting the challenge.
One of the latest additions to this web site is our Burn Survivor Resources page which provides other web sites a burn survivor may find beneficial. These include an advocate for quality burn care and burn prevention at the National level; a permanent cosmetic makeup technician; custom made pressure garments for burn scar management; treatments for skin and wound healing, and nutritional support; a burn survivor recovery site offering information, a chat room, burn question forum and an email list; and a gel beneficial for scar treatment.
After browsing our menu of topics, we would love to hear from you! You may:
- fill out the contact form in "Post A Message" (link no longer available)
- email SBSS, or
- call
During the fall of 2001, I retired with my family to Tucson, AZ. I'm enjoying this new life but I'm staying actively involved with
burn survivors and the burn units in Tucson and Los Angeles. I'm still eager to offer mentoring and answer your e-mails. Surviving Gracefully is a way to move forward in life.
Little did I know then that about a year later, Surviving Cancer Gracefully would provide an additional way to move forward in life. Please join me as I share with you what facing breast cancer as a burn survivor has been like.
To anyone that might know me, I remain your friend always.
Gracefully yours, Maria Tereza
